So today I thought I would do a movie review on Disney's "Tangled" (Rapunzel) I also just figured out how to put GIF s in here, and there will be spoilers, Duh! Before I get started, I must say Tangled may be one of my favorite movies now. (And the animators did a good job on her hair, I love it, its gorgeous!)
The Story: The story is told by Eugene a.k.a Flynn Rider (Rapunzel's future husband).The story starts with a drop of sunlight falling to earth and a flower blooming there, Mother Gothel an old woman finds the flower, sings to it the flower starts to glow, making her young again. Many years later the queen falls ill while giving birth to Rapunzel, the kingdom is scoured and the magical flower found. The queen gains back her health and the baby is born healthy.
Soon afterwards Mother Gothel climbs into the room where baby Rapunzel is sleeping and sings her song, Rapunzel's hair starts to glow and Mother Gothel cuts a lock of her hair for herself only to find it turn brown and lose its power. Desperate to stay young Mother Gothel kidnaps Rapunzel, raising her as her own daughter in an old tower in a hidden valley. Hoping to be reunited with their lost daughter someday, the king and queen release thousands of lanterns into the night sky every year on her birthday.
Rapunzel watches the lights fill the sky every year, and as her 18th birthday approaches she begs Mother Gothel to let her go out and see them, Mother Gothel refuses to let her go, and keeps up the story of the world being a cruel place and Rapunzel having to stay in the tower lest people try to cut her long magical hair. Rapunzel then wishes for paints for her birthday and Mother Gothel leaves for the three day journey it takes to acquire them. Meanwhile Flynn Rider steals the Princess crown from the castle and then double crosses the two brothers who helped him attain the crown. He is also pursued by the kings army, particularly a horse named Maximus. Flynn winds up at the hidden tower and climbs up, he is met by Rapunzel who knocks him out with a frying pan and hides the tiara from him.
When Flynn comes to, Rapunzel makes a deal with him. If he takes her to see the "floating lights" she will give him back the tiara. After some arguing Flynn agrees and the plan is set into motion.
The two wander the forest and into a tavern, escaping through an underground tunnel when the kings men arrive. Mother Gothel comes upon Maximus, seeing that he is a kings horse she runs back to the tower fearing Rapunzel gone. when Rapunzel does not lower her hair, Mother Gothel enters through a secret entrance. She finds the crown and a wanted poster of Flynn Rider. She sets off to search for Rapunzel, following the kings men and then plotting with the two brothers Flynn double crossed.
Among their adventures Rapunzel and Flynn have a near drowning incident in which Flynn reveals that his true name is Eugene, and Rapunzel reveals that her hair glows when she sings.
They soon arrive in the city, People keep stepping on Rapunzel's long hair and Eugene asks four little girls to braid it up For her.
When it gets dark, Eugene and Rapunzel take a boat and release a lantern along with thousands others, they have also become allies with Maximus.
Afterwards things go drastically wrong, Mother Gothel and the brothers catch up, Eugene is arrested by the kings men and sentenced to hang for his crimes, Rapunzel is told that Eugene abandoned her, Brokenhearted she goes back to the tower with Mother Gothel. Maximus organizes a rescue party for Eugene and they head for the tower to save Rapunzel from Mother Gothel.
Meanwhile Rapunzel sits on her bed, reflecting about the day, a sudden memory comes to her from when she was a baby, she realizes that she is the lost princess (not sure how this part is possible) and she confronts Mother Gothel.
When Eugene calls for Rapunzel to throw down her hair, Mother Gothel throws it to him, Rapunzel herself is tied up and gagged. Mother Gothel stabs Eugene (I know, its a kids movie, but its not gory or anything!). Rapunzel promises to go with Mother Gothel if she is allowed to save Eugene, Mother Gothel consents. When Rapunzel bends down to heal Eugene he cuts off her hair with a glass chard, Rapunzel's hair turns brown and Mother Gothel ages rapidly (this seems a bit odd, why would she age so rapidly when the hair was cut, but had attempted a three day journey earlier?) at any rate, she is then thrown out of the window to her death.
Rapunzel's hair has lost its power, and she heals Eugene with her tears (I kind of felt like the writers must have thought "Okay we cut her hair, now how are we going to save Eugene?" and then they resorted to tears;)
Rapunzel is then reunited with her real parents (I hate that they cut her hair but it does make Rapunzel look more like her Mother.)
And of course she marries Eugene, and they lived happily ever after! (If you are a boy 12 or under I am giving you the choice to look away now!)
I loved that Disney turned the story around a bit, that Rapunzel was actually the Princess, and not the one rescued by a prince (not that I have anything against the "knight in shining armor" thing) and that her hair was magical, which is why Mother Gothel needed her, I think those twists were great!
All in all it was a great movie, I also think Rapunzel is the prettiest Disney Princess, Gorgeous hair and very pretty eyes as well. The animators did a good job. But I felt like the writers could have come up with a better way for Rapunzel to discover that she was the lost princess, I can remember quite a few things from when I was three, that is pretty good. But how old was Rapunzel? A day? A week? Not possible. But I still recommend that you watch it if you haven't yet (of course I just told you every detail of the movie but that's besides the point)
